Listen: I Remixed a Media Jeweler Track

Garret Harkawik | 12.16.22

Sometime in late 2020 Sam Farzin asked if I wanted to remix a track from his band’s upcoming LP, The Sublime Sculpture of Being Alive. I did want to!

Sam released an album of sample-based music I made in 2010 on his Lifes Blood label - at the time I was making music by chopping stuff up in Final Cut Pro and rearranging the pieces to make something new. I developed a fairly specific technique that I hadn’t put into use in quite some time. I also typically worked with finished tracks, not discreet stems, so it was a bit of a new experience. I’m no longer using Final Cut, but I was able to recreate the process seamlessly in Premiere. Here’s a screen grab of what the timeline ended up looking like:

An Adobe Premiere timeline showing the process for making the remix.

The track I remixed is “Lightbulb” and I’m pretty pleased that I was able to turn it into something approximating a Penguin Cafe Orchestra track. I ended up revisiting this technique again for a track I used in one of my upcoming films.

You can listen to the remix here (it’s track three, but the who album is worth a listen):

The original track / album is here, and it is also quite good:
